00:00:05:00 - 00:00:26:06 Speaker 1 Hey, everyone, I am here. It's Sabrina Schmitz, and I'm here with my good buddy Jim Jordan. And we are ready to start the 2025 boot camp. But this year, we've got some new stuff for you. We wanted to kind of change things up a little bit and kind of make this more of a show and don't tell kind of situation, right. 00:00:26:06 - 00:00:52:05 Speaker 1 We want to show you guys how to build a good spread from start to finish and walk you through it every step of the way. That's our first part, but then we want you guys to take that and put it into action. We, as we talk about each part of building a spread, going from the concept, the interview, finding the story to actually putting it all together, designing the layout, getting the photos and actually getting a finished product. 00:00:52:06 - 00:01:05:09 Speaker 1 We want you to walk through that with us and practice in your classrooms doing the same activities. So we're going to show you what to do, but then we want to challenge you guys to go out there and do it themselves as well. 00:01:05:09 - 00:01:17:04 Speaker 2 I think we've I think we've too often we talk about things and then don't really break it down into steps to show you how to do it in a way that makes sense to you. 00:01:17:04 - 00:01:26:03 Speaker 2 So hopefully, you know, we're trying this something new and it will be helpful as you get everybody up to speed in writing, interviewing, 00:01:26:03 - 00:01:27:09 Speaker 2 finding an angle, 00:01:27:09 - 00:01:39:14 Speaker 2 writing the story, and then building a spread from there with all the correct things we love to see on every spread in your book. We're really excited about this. This is going to be amazing. 00:01:40:00 - 00:01:49:09 Speaker 1 We are. And it's been fun for us. Like, we're we're except we're getting a jump back in there and do the work that we love so much though. So we're excited to share this with you guys. 00:01:49:09 - 00:01:54:15 Speaker 1 And have and watch you guys put all of this into action in your own classroom. So, 00:01:54:15 - 00:02:05:06 Speaker 1 I know you've probably heard us talk for hours and hours on all of these subjects, and don't worry, all of that in-depth coverage and information is still going to be linked on our site. 00:02:05:10 - 00:02:20:03 Speaker 1 So if you want more detailed information about a specific subject, like interviewing or caption writing or layout, that's still going to be there. We're going to take the time now to show you how to do that step by step, and we'll be here with you every step of the way. 00:02:20:03 - 00:02:21:03 Speaker 1 We're excited guys. 00:02:21:03 - 00:02:23:15 Speaker 1 It's going to be fun. So 2025 Boot Camp. 00:02:23:15 - 00:02:24:10 Speaker 1 Here we go. 00:05:51:00 - 00:06:15:12 Speaker 2 Welcome, everybody, to Boot camp 2025. We are so excited to have you here. For our new and improved version of boot camp, where we want you guys to jump into the action with us. We are going to be modeling and showcasing for you how to do each step of putting together a full, complete spread so that you guys can feel comfortable 00:06:15:12 - 00:06:18:12 Speaker 2 with the whole process from start to finish. 00:06:18:14 - 00:06:22:03 Speaker 2 And we're going to break it down step by step for you. 00:06:22:12 - 00:06:33:05 Speaker 3 First of all, let's talk about what you're going to need to make this all happen. First of all, you're going to need probably some kind of a device to record on. 00:06:33:05 - 00:06:40:08 Speaker 3 You're going to need probably some, if you have a writer's notebook, that'd be great. Pens, paper, that kind of thing. 00:06:40:08 - 00:06:44:12 Speaker 3 If you go through the interview, and is there anything else they need? 00:06:45:05 - 00:06:51:06 Speaker 2 That should all be good. That's really all you need for this first part in your brain. Bring your creative mind. Yes. 00:06:51:10 - 00:07:00:08 Speaker 3 And and your willingness to really search for this story that you're going to write. That's going to be something you want to see in the 2026 yearbook. 00:07:00:08 - 00:07:21:00 Speaker 2 That's right. So what we want to do, what we started to do here was I, I chose Jim as my partner. Okay. And Jim and I are going to, in theory, do a story about each other. And that's what we want you guys to do. We want you to find a partner in class, and we want you to do a profile on them. 00:07:21:00 - 00:07:40:00 Speaker 2 And that's going to be the goal this week and throughout this boot camp process is to create a spread about your partner, getting to know them, get to figure something out about them. And so the first part of doing that is interviewing them and trying to find a story that you think is a story worth telling in your book spread. 00:07:40:07 - 00:07:41:15 Speaker 2 So I'll go ahead. 00:07:42:03 - 00:08:04:11 Speaker 3 And I just I just want to say, don't overthink the whole partner thing, you know, grab somebody. We're going to make it work. If the editors want to take, maybe some of the newer people to help them through the process, that might be helpful as well, because we we all we want everyone, everybody that does this to be 100% successful in this process. 00:08:04:13 - 00:08:09:00 Speaker 3 That's right. Anyway, you can make that set that up. So that's going to happen. Go for it. 00:08:09:01 - 00:08:31:07 Speaker 2 That's right. And so your goal is going to be to create a spread of a profile spread on your partner. So whomever that is you find a buddy, you guys get together and you're going to be working on this together for a throughout the bootcamp process. So Jim is my buddy clearly. And so we're going to start with talking about interviewing and finding the story. 00:08:31:08 - 00:08:55:08 Speaker 2 Everything begins with the interview. It's going to be where you're gathering all of your information, everything you need to find the story. I always say 80, 80 or more. I would even say 80% of story writing and getting creating a spread is the interview. If we can get the information here, it's going to set us up for success throughout the rest of the process. 00:08:55:09 - 00:09:16:10 Speaker 2 And I always think it's not interviews, not a one and done thing. Right, Jim. Like there's sometimes there's multiple interviews that need to occur to get all the information that you need. You might need to talk to multiple people. And you should be interviewing with your story in mind. So we haven't we're going to talk about storytelling, our story writing and copywriting in step two. 00:09:16:12 - 00:09:36:02 Speaker 2 But I want you to think through that process of like, what kind of information do I really need in order to really tell a story? You know what what kinds of questions do I want to ask? What do I need to get to know? So kind of be thinking through that and be curious. Obviously, like curiosity and true curiosity. 00:09:36:02 - 00:09:57:06 Speaker 2 Don't think it we want like we want you to really, really want to know some things and find out information about your partner. And at the end of the day, the goal is just having a conversation. Right? It's just the, I always the there's an old reporter that called it the art of hanging out, and you guys know how to do that already. 00:09:57:08 - 00:09:58:03 Speaker 2 You're already. 00:09:58:03 - 00:10:23:09 Speaker 3 Ahead. That's right. There probably is even a a video of that session that we've done before out there somewhere. We can probably link it up. But one of the things about storytelling that's so amazing is I do believe that everybody has a story that needs to be told. So it's up to you as the writer to find it. 00:10:23:11 - 00:10:48:00 Speaker 3 I mean, really, you're going on a treasure hunt to find the most important thing you want to write about this person. Another important thing to consider is where does this go? This could be this might come up in a profile section. It might be in the mug section. Or perhaps more importantly for this, for your thinking, this could be a profile in this summer section of the book. 00:10:48:01 - 00:10:59:07 Speaker 3 So that will, that will that will have some bearing on what you what's. 00:10:59:08 - 00:11:02:08 Speaker 3 Get on some of your questions so that this will be as easy as. 00:11:02:08 - 00:11:03:12 Speaker 4 Possible for you. 00:11:03:13 - 00:11:22:10 Speaker 2 I agree. And part of this is going to be talking to your advisor and making sure that you guys in the future have a process. How do you how do you get interviews? Are you able to call students out of the classroom? Do you go to their classroom? Are you able to interrupt a class to do an interview? 00:11:22:12 - 00:11:42:08 Speaker 2 What does that look like? You know, do you have a way? I obviously I always think it's important that you are prepared with what to say when you introduce yourself to someone like, hi, my name is Sabrina Schmitz. I'm from the Stampede yearbook staff. I, I'm working. 00:11:42:09 - 00:11:56:13 Speaker 2 Do you have a minute? You know, and being able to be prepared with that introduction so that you can get the best interview possible. All right. Let's pause. Danielle. Yeah. You lost me. Which sentence? 00:11:56:14 - 00:12:06:02 Speaker 1 Yeah, I would say like within the last 30s. I don't know if it was for Jim, but you you buffered for about seconds. 00:12:06:03 - 00:12:11:05 Speaker 2 Can you can let's pause here for a second because we're already almost done with the ten minutes and we haven't. 00:12:11:05 - 00:12:16:13 Speaker 1 So I was going to say what I was thinking. This is becoming very training video. 00:12:16:15 - 00:12:19:00 Speaker 2 Yeah. 00:12:19:02 - 00:12:40:00 Speaker 1 I would argue that you don't I mean, personally, like, all you have to do is say for all of the instruction content on how to how to interview you, make sure you watch our training videos, class starters and read our curriculum. Let's actually talk about the interview and what we did. I don't think you need to need to teach anything. 00:12:40:01 - 00:12:44:02 Speaker 1 Just because we're going to reference those materials. 00:12:44:03 - 00:12:56:00 Speaker 2 So then do we need to talk about protocol in entering classrooms or expansion and follow, like any of that stuff, or do we just maybe do that as a debrief. 00:12:56:01 - 00:13:15:07 Speaker 1 At the end? Might be a good debrief that Jim does at the end, like things to consider, like teachers are teaching. Don't be rude, that kind of thing. Because that happens with kids a lot that they just barge into classrooms. Right. I don't know if what are your guys thoughts on that? 00:13:15:09 - 00:13:28:15 Speaker 2 I think so, because already like when you when you when it was five minutes in and we hadn't even. Yeah. Gotten to the actual crux of it. Yeah. I already felt like we were in the weeds a little. 00:13:28:15 - 00:13:52:09 Speaker 1 And don't be afraid to be vague. Just say reference our the materials listed. You don't even have to say the name of anything because I'm about on file at all, so don't worry about that. And just go straight into what you. What? Your interview was really okay. Yeah. No stress. It's all good. I know, it's weird. It's like a weird shift from what we normally do, the training videos. 00:13:52:10 - 00:13:55:04 Speaker 1 So it's different. 00:13:55:05 - 00:14:05:14 Speaker 2 Okay. We can go back. Should we go back and do the, the first part where we are. 00:14:05:15 - 00:14:06:05 Speaker 2 Like.
